We’re kicking off Walk to School Month on Wednesday at our kids elementary school with some hot beverages and tasty snacks on the playground.
If you’re so inclined, and with a few modifications to the 7 day plan, you too can pull off a last-minute event. All you need is some enthusiasm, a few signs, some warm bodies and maybe some food and drink.
Who doesn’t love a party on the playground to start a school day right?
Leslie and I have thrown together planned walk to school events in October for the past few years. In the past we have sponsored incentive programs with tracking calendars and prizes based on the number of trips completed. This year we decided to go low budget and make some signs and serve hot chocolate or cider on the playground for Walk to School Day.
Walking and biking to school is mostly about creating and supporting community, getting some exercise and reducing traffic around the school.
And we don’t need no stinking prizes for that, do we?
How about you? Tell us about your event for Walk to School Day or Month!

THis year it’s quiet. It’s been raining all week and I found how I can’t be there b/c I have a class.
We are gonna have a poster for kids to sign saying they want to walk, have walked or will walk. kinda quiet. hopefully there will be a poster filled with kids names on it hanging in the school.
Love this idea. I think we’ll use it.
We use Tyvek for posters because it holds up when they get wet! I think we’ll have the kids sign a poster tomorrow. Thanks!
